Iran: Steel Workers on Strike

Iran: Steel Workers on Strike

Ahvaz Steel Factory employees continued their strike for the sixth consecutive day on Wednesday, chanting anti-regime slogans as they demanded their unpaid salaries and better working conditions.
They started their protest on the streets of Ahvaz, Khuzestan Province, before marching to the front of the governor’s office and blocking off the surrounding streets. In videos surfacing online, protesters can be heard chanting “We will not leave from here, until we receive our rights”, “no nation has seen this much injustice”, “Workers of Khuzestan, unite, unite”, and that the mullahs “chant for Imam Hossein, but pride themselves in thieving”, referencing how the Regime wrongly uses Islam to justify its misdeeds.
On Tuesday, the protesters had closed the main gate of the factory, while holding rallies outside of the governor’s office and the entrance of the Ahvaz Sports Complex, in order to prevent Eshaq Jahangiri, the first vice president of Hassan Rouhani’s government, from entering.
Striking workers at the Haft Tappeh sugar mill in Ahvaz, who continued their protests for the tenth consecutive day on Wednesday outside the Shush governor’s office, cried out in solidarity with the steel workers.
They said: “Proud steel workers, thank you, thank you.”
While Iranian opposition coalition National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) issued a statement earlier in support of the strikes.
It read: “Workers of the Ahvaz National Steel Group also protested on Saturday, gathering in front of the governor's office in the city. They chanted: No nation has seen this much injustice; Hossein Hossein, is their slogan, theft is their pride; what did behind the scene hands have done with the factory?”
While Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the Iranian Resistance, hailed the Ahvaz steelworkers, along with other strikers and protesters across the country, and called on the rest of Iran to join them.
She said: “Poverty, inflation, unemployment and corruption were brought to our country by the religious fascism, and will continue as long as this medieval regime is in power.”
This is the third time this year that the Ahvaz steel workers have gone on strike to demand their rights be respected.
In June, security forces detained over 50 workers and four detainees were brutally beaten after being taken to a detention centre.
The Free Workers Union of Iran said at the time: “One of the workers was beaten to the extent that he suffered a haemorrhage, but the authorities did not make an effort to transfer him to a medical facility.”
The FWU reported that another detainee was shot with a taser gun while in custody.
They also went on strike in February.
