Iran truckers continue strikes, protests for 8th consecutive day

IRAN: May 29, 2018 - Truck drivers in cities across Iran continued their strikes for the eighth consecutive day on Tuesday. These protests have now engulfed 257 cities throughout the country.

All pledges and pretexts resorted to by the Iranian regime’s authorities, aiming to end the strike, have bore no fruit to this day and numerous reports from a variety of cities indicate the strikes continue unabated.

Solidarity

Taxi drivers in Urmia and Qaemshahr, northwest and northern Iran, respectively, joined the nationwide strike today. Yesterday, drivers of the Tipax transportation company in Tehran refused to deliver any loads and announced their solidarity with the country’s protesting truck drivers.
Tehran truck drivers on strike were also seen blocking the road to Khavaran.

Demands

Drivers of trucks and flat-bed vehicles began their nationwide strike on the morning of May 22nd, protesting poor living conditions, low wages, high logistical fees and …
The drivers are demanding an increase in their paychecks considering their harsh work conditions and retirement pensions after 25 years of work in this field.
They are also protesting unjust and high commission fees demanded in each terminal, saying there is no specific policy or framework and each official is making demands based on their own will and without any supervision or accountability. The drivers are also demanding an end to repressive measures by police patrols on the road.

Raising concerns

As the strike continue and drivers show no sign of ending their protests until their demands are fulfilled, the Iranian regime’s so-called MPs were seen discussing the issue on Sunday. A warning is now issued to the Iranian president Hassan Rouhani’s Road and Construction Minister.
A slate of the drivers’ protests and demands have been mentioned:
  • Lack of adequate daily and monthly fuel rations
  • Improper medical insurance and their job is not considered harsh, preventing the drivers from receiving the pensions they deserve
  • Staterun transferring companies receive huge wages while the drivers live in poverty
  • Corruption seen in load terminals, especially in ports
  • Unjust distribution of loads and authorities weakening this process
  • Wages are very low and drivers can’t make ends meet as the cost of tires and spare parts have increased by 60 percent
There is word amongst Iranian regime officials that the country has 500,000 unhappy drivers, making it clear this is a very dire matter for the senior hierarchy.
