How to correctly understand Morocco severing ties with Iran

4 May 2018-- Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita suspended diplomatic relations with Iran on Wednesday, May 2nd, protesting Tehran’s meddling in his country’s internal affairs. Rabat has also summoned its ambassador from Tehran.
This is considered a very important political blow to the Iranian regime while not being the first time Morocco takes such measures, as similar episodes were witnessed in 2009 and 2014. This third severing of diplomatic ties is considered completely different as Iran is facing very troubling times. This is no longer limited to a bilateral diplomatic matter as a slate of Arab countries, including Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and even Qatar, a long-standing ally of Iran, is supporting Rabat’s move.
The Arab League issued a statement announcing its solidarity with Morocco in this regard, adding this organization will stand in the face of Iran’s strategy of expanding its influence throughout the Middle East.
Tehran’s meddling in Arab countries is condemned, according to the Arab League statement.
The recent decision adopted by Arab leaders portrays a strong position against Iran’s influence across the region, adding a four-party committee has been assigned to Iran’s dossier to specify an active framework with the goal of coordinating policies and unifying positions in the face of Iran’s threats and meddling, the statement adds.
Following a known practice, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi denied all the accusations raised in this regard. More importantly, however, is his weak language that resembles Tehran’s grave concerns on this dire matter.
“We see it necessary to make it clear that one of Iran’s most important foundations and foreign policy principles in its relations with other governments and countries across the globe is, and has been, deep respect and recognizing their sovereignty and security, and not meddling in the internal affairs of other countries,” he said in a press conference.
Severing political ties by raising the issue of meddling by Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah aimed at disrupting stability and calm in Morocco, further prove the remarks of various officials across the globe of Iran being behind all crises, unrests, and turmoil. These developments gain even more important as they arrive only days prior to the May 12th Iran nuclear deal deadline.
This isolation has a grave impact on the balance of power, both on the international stage and in the ongoing face-off between the Iranian people and ruling regime, while also raising the spirit amongst Iran’s restive populace.
This is where Tehran becomes increasingly concerned, knowing such matters will drive rifts even further among its ranks and files.
