Merkel’s difficult mission of defending the Iran nuclear deal
Analysis by PMOI/MEK
April 27, 2018 - German Chancellor Angela Merkel is visiting U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington in an effort to convince the American leader to not withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal. Prior to Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron failed in a similar mission of persuading Trump.
Merkel, whose country is a supporter of Iran accord, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), believes the agreement is a first step of preventing from obtaining nuclear weapons.
In a joint press conference with Trump on Friday Merkel emphasized that Germany believes Iran has destructive measures in other fields. Europe stands alongside the U.S. and we know Iran has influence in the Middle East, Syria and Lebanon, and this must be contained, she added.
Trump continued to show his previous stance, emphasizing Iran is present anywhere there is violence and bloodshed in the Middle East.
Asked if an agreement is not advanced will he use military force, Trump explained he cannot provide an opinion about military force, while insisting Iran will not have nuclear weapons.
Considering Macron’s failure to convince Trump to maintain the JCPOA intact, it is safe to say Merkel has a very difficult task ahead of her.
Iran is learning the hard way that the Obama era is over and the road ahead is forecasting to be very difficult. The West is currently targeting the JCPOA, Iran’s ballistic missile program and its influence throughout the Middle East. Tehran is gravely concerned of its drastic human rights violations dossier coming under international spotlight.
