Mothers of Yemeni prisoners held by Houthis say sons being tortured with chains

Al Arabiya, 24 December 2017 - The Yemeni Mothers of Kidnapped People Association said on Saturday that Houthi militias have continued to torture detainees by chaining their legs and forcing them to wear prison jumpers unsuitable during the cold conditions this winter.
According to a statement issued by the association, Houthi militias continue to deny the abductees, especially those in Sanaa's political security prison, from regular visits and did not allow their families to provide them with food, water, medicine and clothing.
“Although these days are the most severe days of winter, prison officials are continuing to torture our children both physically and psychologically. They have tied the legs of dozens of them with chains, and pulled out all the clothes,” the statement read.
Sanaa is witnessing a particularly harsh winter this year, with temperatures reaching below zero in some areas, according to meteorologists.
The mothers said in their statement that dozens of the abductees and those who were forcibly hidden in Houthi prisons have been infected with serious and chronic diseases after they were prevented from regular exposure to the sun, being severely torture and their health deliberately neglected.
The statement called on the UN envoy to Yemen “to fulfill its humanitarian obligations to the issue of the abductees' and called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to visit the detainees.
They also appealed to the UN’s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and other human rights organizations to “quickly save the lives of the abducted and the forcibly disappeared, and to pressure the armed groups to release them unconditionally”.
Houthi prisons are crowded with thousands of kidnapped and forcibly disappeared opponents of its sectarian coup and recently doubled the campaigns of kidnappings against the leaders and loyalists of the late President Ali Abdullah Saleh against the backdrop of their participation in a popular uprising against them earlier this month.
