Iraq: Parliament sees new large faction come to life

Iraq, Sept. 4, 2018 - The “Reform & Reconstruction” faction, with 184 of the 329 MPs, was established on Monday in Iraq, presenting the largest alliance in what will be the country’s fourth parliament following the 2003 war.

According to the Iraqi constitution, the faction with the largest number of members in the first session will be missioned to form the government. Media reports indicate Hiader al-Abadi, the Prime Minister of Iraq prior to this round of elections, represented the papers of the “Reform & Reconstruction” faction with 184 signatures to the Parliament’s Sunni speaker.

10 groups have joined to form this alliance, including the Saeroon led by Muqtada Sadr; al-Nasr led by Haider al-Abadi; al-Hekma, led by Ammar al-Hakim, al-Wataniya led by Ayad Allawi; and al-Mehwar led by Osama al-Nujaifi.

Saeroon coalition member Jasel al-Halafi said the parliament will be suspended for 72 hours to allow agreements on the presidency, parliament speaker, and prime minister. All members elected to parliament in the May 12^th election were present in Monday’s parliamentary session.

Tensions

Hours prior to the Iraqi Parliament’s first session on Monday conflicting reports were published about which parties would be able to establish the necessary faction to form the next government.

The Saeroon coalition led by Muqtada Sadr and the al-Fath coalition, consisting of a variety of Iraqi Shiite militia groups (Hashd al-Shaabi, aka, the Popular Mobilization Forces), had each established their own alliances and were claims of forming the necessary faction.
