Female rebel commander Souad Kayari dies fighting Assad’s forces
The Times, January 23, 2018 - A prominent female commander in the rebel forces fighting President Assad has been killed on the front lines in the northwest of Syria.
Souad Kayari, 40, known as Umm Aboud, had fought for four years on her home turf near the Abu Zuhour air base in eastern Idlib. Her death was reported by opposition activists on Saturday.
It was later confirmed by Colonel Riad Asaad, the defector who became one of the first leaders of the Free Syrian Army, who said he had spoken to her the night before she died. “She told me about the situation there, about how fierce the Russian shelling was and the brutal attack of the Iranian occupying forces,” he said. She said she preferred to die for her country than to live under the rule of tyrant Assad. Her struggle and martyrdom will be inspirational to hundreds of other brave Syrian women.
