From floods to droughts, government mismanagement triggers protests in Iranian cities

Reported by PMOI/MEK

Iran, Feb. 1, 2019 - On Thursday, protests continued in many Iranian cities. Below is a brief report of protests in different provinces.

Khuzestan: demonstrations erupt in protest to government’s lack of response to floods

In Rafi, Khuzestan province, the people expelled an IRGC commander who had come to visit the district three days after it was struck by floods. The people were telling this regime official, “We don’t want your help.”
Earlier in the week, rainstorms in the province of Khuzestan flooded Karun, Dez and Karkheh rivers. Worn out infrastructure could not prevent the floods from reaching the cities and villages in the region. The disaster has caused much distress for the people of the region and forced many people to evacuate their homes. Regime officials and government bodies have done next to nothing to prevent or to mitigate the situation, triggering more protests by the inhabitants of the struck villages.
The people of Rafi held their demonstration in front of the mayor’s office and expressed their outrage at the government’s indifference to the damage caused to their lives.

Without government support, the people of Khuzestan have proceeded to doing whatever they can to protect their homes and create flood dams.

The situation is still very dire for the people of the province. Roads in Susangerd village have been submerged under water and only trucks can pass.

Isfahan: protests by customers of housing company

In Isfahan, customer of Keshvari housing project held demonstrations in protest to the looting of their wealth and lack of government response to their demands. The protesters have invested in the project for several years, expecting to receive access to low-price residence. The project was supposed to be completed in 2-3 years, but after more than seven years, the customer have not been able to move to their new homes. Many questions linger over the process and management of the project. It’s not clear why it has taken so long and how the budgets and investments of the customers have been spent. The government and the company’s authorities have not been very responsive on the issue.
The situation has cast doubts over whether the entire project was another government-run scheme to steal out of the pockets of the people. The customers of the Keshvari project have been protesting regularly to achieve their demands.

Isfahan: Farmers protest to dam outlets remaining closed

In the city of Falavarjan, Isfahan, farmers held demonstrations because the government has refused to open dam outlets to give them access to the waters of Zayandeh Rud, the main river of Isfahan province, to irrigate their fields.
In the past year, the farmers of Isfahan have been regularly protesting to the government’s mismanagement of the province’s water sources. The excessive building of dams and water channels by Iranian regime institutions, especially the IRGC, have caused great damage to Isfahan’s agriculture. Thousands of farmers have been protesting and intermittently confronting security forces because of the damage caused to their lives.
